HOSTAGE LIFE's "Walking Papers" is everything you could want in a punk album in these comfortable days as "the scene" sleepwalks towards repeating the bloated excess of the early 1970s. Brimming with anthemic and pissed off punk rock perfection, buzzsaw melodies and huge choruses all underpinned with searing visceral lyrics to remind you that punk was about standing out, not fitting in.
HOSTAGE LIFE formed in Toronto Canada in 2002, and released their first EP, Sing for the Enemy on Underground Operations (Closet Monster and Protest The Hero). Far across the water Household Name Records fell in love with the EP and licensed it for release in Europe in Spring 2006 and HOSTAGE LIFE immediately received strong response from the underground press and webzines.
"Walking Papers" is an album that shows a distinct progression for the band in terms of song writing and pace that really hits home and continues the band's theme of song titles with lengthy acerbic subtitles/explanations.
Opening with the intense call to arms "We Will Make You Crawl" ("Just Pretend That Your Lips are Stitched and Let Us Do The Thinking"), HOSTAGE LIFE makes one thing pretty clear from the off - they are making music for the sake of making music, regardless of whether you like it or not. But if you were in any doubt of that, the balls-deep war drumbeats and chorus of "I don't give a fuck if you dance to this" should close the door on that doubt.
With this we're off on a 14 track journey through a range of subjects from our everyday lives rarely touched on in the brave new world of popular punk - our fucked up lives, deaths, entertainments, stupid product endorsements ("Hostage Life's Legally Distinct Cola Commercial or You're Stupid and You're Gross but if You Drink This Someone Might Actually Love You"), cancer, unplanned pregnancy, religion and more. What's more, they do it in a way that's catchy, critical, and clever.
"Walking Papers" channels the spirit and attitude of punk rock's early years while avoiding the cliches that have plagued the genre's purists and the horror currently inflicted on us all by prevailing trends. "Walking Papers" is an intelligent and emotionally intense commentary on modern life and HOSTAGE LIFE bring a new and refreshing voice to the world of punk rock.
"Walking Papers", has received significant positive reviews in Canada and the first single, "This Song Was Written By A Committee" check out the video has (unexpectedly) achieved widespread commercial radio-play leading to a raucous live performance on MTV Canada.
Heavily influenced by the ethos and immediacy of 'The Clash' and 'Stiff Little Fingers', HOSTAGE LIFE have taken punk rock sensibility and molded it into their own music that takes you back to the roots of punk rock: three chords, anger, honesty, and (most importantly) fun!
